Xoopserver :: U3 and Portable Applications
Hi Rick,

Yes!
You are missing Xtory!

As you already know, you can find many solutions out there to run locally a server (apache, mysql, php), like Xampp or EasyPHP.
Well, now we have Xoopserver written by Mikhail to run Xoops Cube.

Xtory

We had first suggest at xoops.org to create a cd-rom running a server with Xoops and self-study based training courseware... to be distributed at different events, presentations and workshops.

There was three guys : the good, the bad and the ugly!
And the situation seemed stoped in time... until an over-reaction made the project forks.
One... moved away. Who do you think it was?

Nevertheless, a new adventure starts with a lot of new possibilities!

Some time ago, we have discussed about end-users tools (common tasks: cvs, local server, module and , and much more). By that time, Mikhail had compiled a draft of a local server pre-configured to run Xoops Cube. And wrote an user-friendly cvs tool to get the lastest files.

I was moving quite often between home, university lab, and workshops, etc. So, i got an usb key, write an interface with lingo to launch my tools and install Mikhail's server running Xoops. Overall, I have been quite satisfied with it.

These days... technologies like U3 and portable applications make one's mobility easyer than ever!

Since 2004 this new format is been improved to enable users to carry working versions of applications, as well as files, around with them on simple plug-in USB drives.

And since sptember 2005, the U3 format has found widespread support from USB drive vendors.

The "smart drives" are targeted at mobile users who don’t want to carry around a laptop or PDA. Instead, users will be able to take recompiled versions of their favourite programs on the road on a drive outwardly identical to a conventional USB drive, plugging into any available PC as required.

At the point the U3 drives are removed from the host PC, all trace of the software is removed from that machine.

U3
Quote:

Imagine carrying your favorite software, preferences, profiles and data on a device no bigger than a pack of gum. With a U3 smart drive, you can plug into any Windows 2000 or XP PC and work , play a game, message friends, send email, edit photos and more, all without worrying if applications are installed on the computer.

Portable Apps
Quote:

It is a community site devoted to the development, promotion and use of portable applications. The site was created by John T. Haller, the developer behind numerous portable applications (like Portable Firefox and Portable OpenOffice.org) as a way to centralize the knowledge and development efforts of multiple portable application efforts.

Xoops Cube Webmasters Tools
Contribute to make end-user Xoops Cube experience unforgettable and incomparable. Provide a solution key in hand to download the last development, run Xoops Cube on a local server, use other tools written by Mikhail to rename your installation, create your own modules with Cubson written by Minahito, start translations... make screenshots of your themes and a lot more to come.

Hope that helps?

Best Regards,

WoW!
